CinefestOZ is thrilled to announce the launch of a new film-focussed cultural event in Albany, set to debut 14-16 May 2020.

CinefestOZ Albany will bring a program of film events to entertain and intrigue in true film festival style. Audiences can expect to see feature, short and documentary films and hear from filmmakers as they go behind the lens of their cinematic creations.

The event program will be announced next month and is expected to feature a special opening night event, short film sets, several screenings of new Australian film, free community screenings over two days and a program of school incursions and excursions.

CinefestOZ Chair Helen Shervington said CinefestOZ Albany will complement the City’s thriving culture and arts scene and add to the region’s reputation as a cultural and filmmaking hub.

“Albany is the perfect place for a film festival and the  region is a wonderful place to make films as recently seen with feature films H is for Happiness and RAMS being made in the area. It is a vibrant city with a successful cultural community.”

The City of Albany council agreed to support the pilot film event in 2020, recognising the festival’s standing as a unique cultural asset and the opportunity to showcase the city and its creative heart.

“We’re really excited to be partnering with CinefestOZ, we think it’ll be a great exercise for Albany and given the interest we’ve had in making films here lately, it will add to that and be something extra within our already thriving arts and culture scene,” Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said.

Albany schools and students are also eligible to enter the Cinesnaps Short Film Competition (15-18 yrs), an established competition culminating in a grand finale event adjudicated by Australian film professionals and chaired by actor and filmmaker Myles Pollard.

CinefestOZ Albany will form an Albany Advisory Group to plan for the event.

Background

CinefestOZ is an extraordinary five-day film festival which began in 2008 in WA’s South West. Held in August each year, this year’s dates are 26-30 August 2020.  This regional destination festival has become a magnet for filmmakers and film lovers and now flourishes as one of Australia’s foremost Australian film festivals, championing Australian film and culture. Through the development of strong industry relationships, an understanding of Australian film, support from high profile actors, groups, businesses and the community, CinéfestOZ plays its part to ensure Australia’s film industry thrives and closer to home, continues to enrich the social fabric of the locations it presents in. The festival shapes cultural, economic, tourism and social outcomes, and through its Community Program especially, provides a range of opportunities for regional youth.

The Community Program comprises Cinesnaps (schools), IndigifestOZ (Indigenous), Movie Crew (volunteers) and free Community Screenings.
