2017 marks the first year IndigifestOZ will feature within Bunbury’s extensive festival program.
This exciting IndigifestOZ development sees Albert Namatjira documentary Namatjira Project screened at Grand Cinemas, followed by a Q&A with food and refreshments at the recently refurbished Maker + Co on August 27.
Namatjira Project is about one of Australia’s most influential Indigenous artists, Albert Namatjira, and his family’s quest to regain the copyright over his famous watercolour artworks. The film features WA actor and Pitjatjantjara man Trevor Jamieson, Scott Rankin, Gayle Quarmby, Kevin Namatjira and Mostyn Kentaltja.
Namatjira’s granddaughters, Lenie Namatjira and Gloria Pannka, also appear in the film, and will join producer Sophia Marinos and Big hART Community Liasion and Support officer Carmen Robinson at the festival and during the screenings’ accompanying Q&A sessions.
Producer Sophia Marinos says:
“This is such an important film about one of Australia’s most iconic families and their fight for justice. It is an utter contradiction that the Namatjira family – recently acknowledged by the Queen – struggle for acknowledgment here in Australia. As a family and an art movement, they are nevertheless resilient and the future is bright. We are really excited for our first audiences in WA to be here at CinefestOZ – we look forward to inviting them on the Namatjira journey with us!”
The Namatjira Project is part of CinefestOZ Film Festival’s Rio Tinto supported IndigifestOZ program.
Rio Tinto superintendent Regional Communities Justin Francesconi says:
“Rio Tinto is proud to have been the major supporter of IndigifestOZ since its inception three years ago and we are looking forward to seeing what it contributes to the festival this year. It’s integral we continue to support the development of Indigenous film in WA and the ongoing engagement and integration of Indigenous culture in our community.”
