Malcolm Toohey (Joel Edgerton) is a committed husband and father and a smart detective who’s not afraid to put his body on the line. During a major drug bust he takes a shot in his bullet-proof vest. That night, his Drugs Squad rowdily celebrate their success and Malcolm’s courage, at the local pub, and although Malcolm has been drinking, he takes the chance of driving his car home.

Then, everyone’s worst nightmare occurs.  While driving on a quiet street near the break of dawn, he clips a young newspaper boy, knocking him from his bike and leaving him critically injured on the road. Malcolm calls an ambulance and starts CPR. The little boy clings to life but when the police and ambulance arrive on the scene, Malcolm gives voice to the lie that will change the course of his life.  Afraid of the consequences of the accident, he fails to tell the truth first to the emergency operator, then the ambulance officers who arrive on the scene and then a young policeman.

Jim Melic (Jai Courtney) is a rookie officer who has just been paired with veteran detective Carl Summer (Tom Wilkinson). They are investigating a paedophile ring but when a call comes in for the suspected hit and run, Jim enthusiastically volunteers their attendance.  Immediately Jim is suspicious of Malcolm and his story. This draws him into conducting his own investigation and raising his concerns with Carl.  Carl already knows the truth and in an attempt to protect a fellow cop, has stage-managed Malcolm’s apparent innocence at the scene of the accident.  As Jim becomes more insistent in his enquiries, Carl’s own distinguished career is also put on the line.

Who is right and who is wrong?  As these three detectives become embroiled in a tense psychological struggle, every idea they’ve ever had about the meaning of justice, guilt and innocence will be questioned.

How far will these men go to both disguise and unravel the truth?
