Albany Festival Program Live!
CinefestOZ Albany is thrilled to announce the Albany premiere of the locally made feature film We Bury the Dead as a major highlight of its 2025 program of film screenings, free cultural events, schools engagement and live performances, running 19-21 September.
Filmed in and around Albany, the gripping and emotional thriller comes from acclaimed WA writer/director Zak Hilditch (1922, These Final Hours) and stars the UK’s Daisy Ridley (Star Wars), Mark Coles Smith (Mystery Road Origins) and Brentan Thwaite.
Ridley plays Ava, a desperate woman searching for her husband in the aftermath of a devastating military experiment in Tasmania. Her search takes a chilling turn when the corpses she’s burying begin to show signs of life.
Festival CEO Cassandra Jordan said: “Bringing locally made films back to community is in the true spirit of CinefestOZ.”
“For many of the talented locals who worked on the production, CinefestOZ Albany will be the first time seeing their work on the big screen, with their family and friends, in their own community.”
“We Bury the Dead showcases the incredible skill and creativity of local crew and talent, alongside internationally recognised filmmakers. We’re proud to celebrate the film’s Albany premiere with the community who helped bring it to life.”
Albany Mayor Greg Stocks said: “With Albany firmly on the cinematic map, our continued partnership with CinefestOZ is more important than ever.”
“This festival welcomes filmmakers and industry professionals, keeps the magic of film alive in our city, and offers movie lovers the chance to experience and celebrate the very best in Australian cinema.
“It is an opportunity to see more films, gain insights into the industry, connect with like-minded people, and be inspired by our own local talent.”
CinefestOZ would like to acknowledge Major Albany Partner, City of Albany and partners Orana Cinemas, Hilton Garden Inn Albany, Quality Apartments Banksia Albany and schools supporter Southern Ports.
