The Australian screen industry is a powerhouse of culture and economy however, traditional business models have remained stagnant, failing to keep up with the evolving technology landscape and market demands.

CinefestOZ Film Festival, in partnership with Curtin University, are looking to solve this problem by introducing screen industry professionals to the principles of startup business formation in the first Entrepreneurial Skills for Screen Business workshop with special guest Ludo Studios’ Head Finance and Strategy, Daniel Schultz.

The Entrepreneurial Skills for Screen Business workshop, developed by Curtin University’s Commercialisation team, will take place on Wednesday August 30 as part of the 2023 Industry Program and be facilitated by Innovation Cluster’s Tash Teakle.

As part of the experience, participants will get the opportunity to hear directly from one of Australia’s most successful screen businesses in the form of a fireside chat with Ludo Studios’ Head Finance and Strategy, Daniel Schultz.

A household name off the back of their success with their flagship IP ‘Bluey’, Ludo Studios are an independently owned three-time Emmy®, Logie, BAFTA and AACTA Award winning production company based in Brisbane. Their aim is to create a prolific sustainable industry in Queensland, while making stories for the world.

CEO Cassandra Jordan said “CinefestOZ is thrilled that Ludo Studios is headlining the ‘Entrepreneurial Skills for Screen Businesses’ workshop for CinefestOZ 2023. Getting new film projects off the ground and making them commercially viable is a challenge for any business,  so to have access to knowledge from industry experts such as Ludo is a big win for filmmakers in WA”.

The workshop is designed to empower participants to transform their business model to foster innovation, drive sustainable growth, and secure long-term prosperity for the Australian screen industry.

Curtin University’s Director of Entrepreneurship Danelle Cross said the workshop was an excellent opportunity to attract more diverse participation in the West Australian innovation driven ecosystem.

“Screen industry professionals have a lot in common with traditional startup entrepreneurs; they just don’t realise it.”

“We’re delighted to be working with CinefestOZ to expand the knowledge distribution of entrepreneurial upskilling into the creative industries through this workshop and particularly pleased to be supporting regional businesses through the engagement of Innovation Cluster to facilitate the workshop on our behalf.”

Those who are looking to establish or are currently operating a screen business in Western Australia from any sector and wishing to attend the Entrepreneurial Skills for Screen Business Workshop are encouraged to submit an expression of interest via the CinefestOZ website by Thursday 24 August 2023. All successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified by 5pm AWST Friday 25 August 2023.

This opportunity is proudly supported by Lotterywest, Spacecubed and the Innovative Society Initiative to help build a smart, innovative and creative WA together.
