In our Australians Abroad special, CinefestOZ presents the Western Australian preview screening of Lee. We celebrate the global achievements of Australian talent, with focus on writers Marion Hume, John Collee, and producers Andrew Mason and Troy Lum. Marion Hume, known as the editor-in-chief of Vogue Australia, John Collee, a renowned Australian writer, and Andrew Mason and Troy Lum, who are Australian film producers with Brouhaha Features; all bring exceptional filmmaking talent to this highly anticipated film. 

MARLU MAN 

Join us for an exclusive live script read of Marlu Man, the compelling feature adaptation by Yamatji, Wonguktha and Murri writer Zac James, of the critically acclaimed short film that premiered at CinefestOZ.

In this special event, actors will bring a scene from the script to life in an intimate setting, offering a unique opportunity to experience the narrative in its raw and unfiltered form.

ROSALIE

Set in 1870s France, Rosalie, portrayed by the radiant Nadia Tereszkiewicz, is an extraordinary young woman harboring a secret. Abel, an indebted tavern owner unaware of her secret, marries Rosalie for her dowry. When Rosalie defiantly decides to embrace her unconventional appearance, the central question emerges: Can Abel truly love her and see beyond her physical differences, once he discovers the truth? 

FLOW: THE ART OF HORATIO T BIRDBATH

Fremantle’s acclaimed street artist tells his story about the 10-year project to meticulously paint the wall behind Gino’s cafe.

We welcome special guests artist, Horatio T Birdbath and filmmaker, Ross McCallum for a Q&A post film. This is a FREE screening in Margaret River.

The fast selling Sat 31 Aug screening of RUNT in Margaret River now includes a Q&A post screening with visiting writer Craig Silvey, hosted by our friends from Margaret River Readers & Writers Festival. 

REVIEWS 

IF MAGAZINE reports that Jon Bell’s horror feature film debut THE MOOGAI has won the Sydney Film Festival Audience Award for Best Australian Narrative Feature. The runner up was film IN VITRO.  Taken from more than 20,000 votes, the announcement of the Audience Awards follows the conclusion of this year’s festival on Sunday evening. Sydney Film Festival director Nashen Moodley paid tribute to each of the filmmakers behind the four winners.

Luke Buckmaster from The Guardian has reviewed AUDREY. A deliciously snarky comedy about a girl in a coma. Jackie van Beek and Hannah Diviney star in Natalie Bailey’s feature debut, which explores a thorny taboo with gallows humour. The family of the titular teenager in Audrey don’t literally pop champagne when she tumbles from the roof and falls into a coma, though they might as well have: this deliciously snarky black comedy makes it brutally clear they prefer it when she’s in a vegetative state, unable to give them grief.

Stephen A Russell from Screen Hub reviewed film LEFT WRITE HOOK. (Trigger warning: sexual abuse) Survivor documentary stings like a bee. Donna Lyon and Shannon Owen’s Australian film documents the physical and psychological healing journey of eight women who have experienced sexual abuse.
